Last weekend (6th June) the Premiers and Colts featured in semi-final games with the Premiers taking on top-of-the table Coastal at Rahotu while the Colts played Tukapa at Vogeltown Park.
BCD Group Premiers travelled out to Rahotu for a semi-final showdown with the top of the table Coastal. Although Old Boys had lost the two regular season encounters the team was confident that they could repeat what happened in last year’s final against the competition favourites. Old Boys started strongly in to the wind controlling both possession and territory which lead to Daniel Waite crashing over to take a 5-0 lead. The game was a tight encounter until the 30th minute when Coastal managed to score 3 unanswered tries to take a 19-5 lead in to the break. Old Boys turned with the wind and were straight on to attack which lead to a Daniel Wait penalty to bring the score back to 19-8. Old Boys kept on attacking but the Coastal defence held strong and they managed to get a scrum on Old Boys line which resulted in a pushover try. Old Boys scored a late try to Brayton Northcott-Hill but they couldn’t cross the line late to give themselves an opportunity to win, eventually going down 26-15. It was a disappointing way to finish the season but the Premiers faced a tough season with injuries and player availability and they will bounce back in 2020. The team would like to thank the coaching and management team for the works they have put in through the season and would like to wish those involved in the finals all the best.
Pepper Construction Ltd NPOB Colts scored an impressive victory 43-19 over Tukapa and with the victory Old Boys is heading for its 2nd consecutive appearance in the finals. Old Boys hit the ground running and had 19 points on the board after 19 minutes but on the back of a few mistakes Tukapa was able to get back in the game as they scored 3 tries to tie the game up at 19-19 early in the second half. However after using the wind really well with Cullen Murfitt’s kicking game, Old Boys was able to exert a lot of score-board pressure on Tukapa and when Old Boys scored a try under the posts Tukapa was forced to attack from its own half. Old Boys maintained the pressure which lead to mistakes from Tukapa allowing Old Boys to run in another 3 tries to take the game away from Tukapa. The key for Old Boys was the depth off the bench which will be important in next week’s final. The team is confident that they are better prepared for the finals than in 2018.
As the Junior Club season comes to a close our Man-on-the-Bank has reflected on positives to come out of the season. Firstly, to have just over 280 players is a massive achievement and ensures the Club will be well represented in the future. The skill level and detail that has been displayed is outstanding, so a huge thank you to the great work all the parents involved in coaching and managing our Junior teams. You’re all champions. Our Club wouldn’t survive without the help from parents and your continued support is greatly appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge the large amount of very talented girls playing as well and commends their skill level and commitment to their game. There is a real path for these young athletes and on these grounds is where it all begins. A special mention also to U7 White and U10 Black for winning their respective tournaments. A huge thank you to the very committed group of Sonia Cloke, Kimberly Thompson and Chris Lane who ensured the season ran as smoothly as possible. Without you giving up your time none of this would have been possible. To the NPOB committee, thank you for your continued support and really making the Juniors part of this club. A massive thanks to our sponsors for their contributions that they’ve made to our Junior teams. It has been hugely appreciated.
